They are definitely in the top 10 bands out there, due to their intelligent, deep, political lyrics, blended with amazing vocals, and excellent guitars. I highly recommend the song "Toxicity" to start out with, just as an experimental taste, and if you DO like them, get the albums. All of the members have a unique style of playing their instruments, and Serj Tankien has one of the most unusual voices in popular music today. Who cares if they're pop. If they make good music, it shouldn't matter. The Beatles were pop, but they are one of the most influential bands ever. Oh, and by the way... the person who said that they use [Drop-D] is only half right. They play in Drop-D tuning one whole step down.

Daron is renowned for his creativity with the guitar, Shavo is a great bassist who is very entertaining to watch, John is as fast and talented a drummer as anyone out there you can name, and Serj speaks for himself, with one of the coolest voices in metal music. 2.) SOAD doesn't rely on corny "extras" that [nu-metal] is known for, like turn tables, goofy sound effects and bad attempts at rapping. Their success is owed solely to their talent. 3.) They're not angsty like most nu-metal bands, and they don't whine about how depressed they are or how they feel like they're going insane... if you want that BS, listen to Slipknot and Linkin Park. The subject matter of System's music is abstract and spans many topics and issues. 4.) They have a sense of humor and innovation. Some of their songs are simply weird and funny. They're definately not afraid to do something different, and it works for them.

System of a Down is so much better than other nu-metalers that it makes people wonder if they could even be called nu-metal.

I know people who listen to death metal and they agree that System of a Down is a good band. Why does everyone say SOAD is loaded with Tattoos and piercings? I don't think any of them has a visible piercing or tattoo. The only strange thing about their appearance is the beards. Yeah, they have some really weird looking beards. Often their songs reflect this weirdness. But it's good weirdness; it sounds cool, it's catchy and it makes you think. System IS different, I could always tell if a song was by system on the radio (even before I started listening to them) thanks to Serj's crazy Armenian voice. Some people refuse to acknowledge their talent because they're stuck in the days of Slayer and Black Sabbath (who are good... but their time is over), but I think SOAD is truly one of a kind.

As time went on, most would say they got more popular, but made less quality music. I'll admit i like some soad songs but i have to say, and this is in all seriousness (no hate toward the band), but their sound is just generally gay. And i can't think of a better word to describe it either. Gay. An awful, awful 'punk band' liked by posers and 'emo'people around the world. These people will call you dumb or illiterate if you say you do not like their music, but this is not the case. Most people dislike their music because it is truely awful. Please don't confuse me with a chav, as I am not, I am not a part of any particular group, I mainly listen to guitar based music, but I don't go out of my way to promote this fact, nor do I go out of my way to look 'popular' or 'different'. Emo scenesters and 'goth' posers have ruined todays music scene. Bands such as Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine, The Strokes, Oasis, The Beatles and many more should be being championed. Anyone can pick up a guitar and play a few power chords over a naff bassline, but it takes sheer talent to do what these guys did. System Of A Down and many others (including but not limited to: Slipknot, Linkin Park, KoRn, Marilyn Manson, Simple Plan, Blink 182, Offspring, etc) make up what is truely the tail end of the music community.

Very little talent required. Simple knowledge of music and song writing is all it takes. Protesting against the war helps in the popularity stakes and strange appearences go without saying.
